Welcome to Zoey's tiny life

Hi! I'm Zoey and I built my very own Tumbleweed Tiny House. It took me about a year, using mostly used and reclaimed materials. I've been living in my tiny house for over a year now - and I write about my home and my life here from time to time. I hope you enjoy!

A little inspiration - literally!

I just spent some time poking around the website for "The Love Shack" and find it quite inspiring.

I wish there was a little more about the build itself and I'm dying to know what is on the inside - but I'm sure they are just so into the adventure itself right now that they'll get back to that sometime.

Snow Dragon and Napalm put out a request for people/places to visit along the road in their travels. I just sent them an email and invited them to come visit our tiny house. Of course - then I'd get to see inside the love shack for myself! I'll keep y'all posted.

Still tiny - but shifting

In a couple of weeks it will be the 2 year anniversary of when I moved into my Lusby model Tumbleweed Tiny house.

Living here has been the best living situation I could  have ever imagined. My friends who own the home and land where I have it parked - have loved having me here. They've stated several times when I've been house sitting and away, how much they miss my presence. Even if we don't see each other or physically cross paths - there was comfort in knowing we were there for each other. So perfect - a communal type arrangement but with all the privacy we each needed and wanted.

I've had a couple of relationships while living here and had toyed with the idea of what it would be like to add another person. Always wondered if there was someone out there that I could comfortably cohabitate in such a small space. But things never solidified and I continued to live here on my own.

Then I met someone very special. Someone I knew from the very beginning that I wanted to be with - now and for however long he'll have me.

He loves my tiny house and has stayed over a few times. He's impressed with the life I've created and all the little solutions I've found for everyday problems. But... He owns a condo himself and he LOVES it. He's lived there for 17 years and never plans to move.

At first he thought long and hard about how he could get my tiny house into his little back yard. I laughed when he said this. "What? I'm not good enough to live in your house with you? You want me near but not in your home?" ha! Cracked me up. Actually he saw how proud I am of my tiny house and my tiny lifestyle. He didn't want to offend me by asking me to give that up. What a sweet, sweet man!

But the truth is - I just want to be with him - no matter what size home we live in. Here's the funny thing though - his condo is only 700sq feet! And a big chunk of that is a staircase. Still a mansion compared to my 117sq feet.

So I've been struggling a bit over what to do with my tiny house - and how to continue to share what I've learned and my passion for choosing to live with just a little bit "less". I've decided to build a slightly smaller tiny house - one that I'll feel comfortable towing around for long distances. It will be built lighter and tighter, using what I know now.

My daughter, who is 21 now, really wants to live in my current tiny house so I think that's exactly what's going to happen. We're discussing it now.

My tiny quest continues and if you watch here you'll get to see me start from scratch again on my next tiny home. I already have the travel trailer I'll be using as the base. Now to build up my energy - buy a few new tools - and to get to work!

One year party

To celebrate my full year of living in my very own Tumbleweed Tiny house I, and my landmates, threw a great open-house party.

Once again my tiny house was filled with love and laughter and friends of all shapes and sizes ;)

I continue to live here - tucked into the corner of my good friend's back yard. No plans to move or change my living arrangements in the near future. I'm looking forward to helping my friend Christian build  his very own tiny home.

Day 356: Approaching the one year mark!

Holy cow! A year? Really? A whole 365 days? WOW!

Come November 1st I will have officially been living in my Tiny house. It all feels so natural now I can't even imagine not living in it.

I'll be throwing an party (of course!) - an open house type event, on Saturday, Nov 13th 2010. If you are in the Seattle area you are welcome (and encouraged) to stop by. Just let me know you'd like to come and I'll get you the address and other details.

Day 355: A fellow local Tiny Houser

These two contacted me way back in December of 2009 as the started their journey building their very own tiny house. They live out on the peninsula and although we tried a couple of times to get together - our busy lives never seemed to cross paths.

They started with a 20ft trailer base - and built their home a bit taller than mine. By using less of a pitch in the roof line, they were able to make better use of the loft space. Looks like they'll even have a king size bed! I am sooooo jealous of that!

They've been moving in little by little and have been basically living in their own creation since mid August. I can't wait to hear how living as a couple goes for them. I'm sure it will be great - after all they've been living in a 5th wheel trailer while building their new tiny home - it's a step up for sure!

Day 348: Got my view back for a bit

Looks like our friend's bus, that has been being stored in our driveway, is on an adventure. I arrived home today to find it gone. They took it on tour to Portland, Or I believe and all I remember being said was something about it being stuffed with puppets - ha!

The bus is amazing. A 1970s greyhound bus that has been converted into a livable space itself. You'd never guess that it has a full galley kitchen (with full sized fridge!), 2 bedrooms and even a real bathtub. Again... jealous ;)

It's nice to see the woods again. I'm blown away about how pretty this location is. I know I get rather down from the lack of direct sunlight - but my tiny house is still very light and bright inside. I think the choice to use the lighter color b-board and the placement of my skylights really contributes to this. Makes me wonder if it might be too bright if I lived somewhere with actual sunshine. Someday, maybe, I'll tow it to somewhere sunny and test it out for myself.

For now, I enjoy the lush green-ness all around, the owls and other wildlife that visit from time to time and the warm company of my landmates.

Day 343: No room for me!

I'm puppy sitting my daughter's dogs, Rupert and Sampson. Laska is home now too so the tiny house is full of puppy love this morning. As a matter of  fact - there isn't room for me on the couch! Sheesh!

My landmates are having "Lazy Sunday" today - It's is an open house for our friends focused on really good food. It's a potluck - but Lydia is making homemade Pho - and she's a fantastic cook. What a wonderful way to spend a day? Hanging around as friends come and go and share amazing food and conversation.

Meanwhile Laska continues to be very, very happy to be home and I'm so happy to have her back again.
